Lisa Garro D.V.M.
Dr. Lisa Garro grew up in Maryland and always wanted to be a veterinarian. She graduated from Smith College in Massachussets in 1989 and then obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in 1994. After graduation, Dr. Garro worked in a bustling traditional veterinary practice in Washington D.C. She later transitioned to a housecall practice in Annapolis, Maryland, where her deep appreciation for home veterinary care began to blossom.
In 1997, Dr. Garro made the move to Charleston and joined a local veterinary practice. However, her experience there left her feeling disillusioned with the rushed and impersonal nature often found in brick and mortar veterinary settings. This dissatisfaction fueled her determination to establish a practice that prioritized high quality, convenient veterinary care focused on treating pets as cherished members of the family. She started Lowcountry Home Vet in 1998.
In November 2000, Lowcountry Home Vet became the first housecall practice in the nation to be accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). To achieve this distinction, Lowcountry Home Vet voluntarily participated in a comprehensive evaluation of our office facility, medical equipment, practice methods, and pet care management. At the time, only about 15% of all small animal veterinary practices in the United States were accredited by this association, whose rigorous practice standards are widely recognized as the industry’s benchmark for quality companion animal practice.
As one of the pioneers in modern home veterinary care, Dr. Garro has been featured in numerous publications including Time Magazine, Lowcountry Dog , Veterinary Business , Trends Magazine (a publication of the American Animal Hospital Association), and The Post and Courier.
Dr. Garro resides in Charleston with her husband Greg, her daughter Isabella, her amazing malamute/husky mix Romeo, and sweet cat also named Isabella (given name from shelter). In her free time, Dr. Garro loves to travel and does pet therapy work with Romeo who is a certified therapy dog.
